Pigment inks HP Designjet Z2100 and Z3100

Good news with the recent introduction of pigment printers from both HP and Canon have finally added competition to the market that has been owned by Epson for years. Not being content to merely catch up to Epson though, HP has taken a large step forward with the new Z2100 and Z3100 photo printers. Both printers, available in 24″ and 44″ sizes, use the new Vivera pigment inks first seen in the B size PhotoSmart Pro B9180 printer.

The Z series is also the first printer that includes a built-in spectrophotometer for creating custom profiles.

Pigment inks have two major advantages over dye-based inks. First, archival life is much greater, with most offering 70 or more years of display life before visible fading occurs. The Vivera inks in the new HP printers are rated by Wilhelm Research at 200 years for both colour and black-and-white prints. The other primary advantage is the variety of media available. While dye ink printers are optimized to work with luster and gloss finish papers, pigments can print on almost any surface.

New HP Designjet Z3200 provides printmaking perfection for renowned photographer Albert Watson

Albert Watson is everywhere. If you are riding the bus or walking down the street, flipping through a magazine or watching TV, chances are, you will see an Albert Watson photograph. With a photography career that spans more than 40 years, his work stretches from fine art that is shown around the world to commercial projects that include the covers of Vogue and Rolling Stone.

Whether preparing for worldwide exhibitions or creating fine art prints, Watson takes on two equally important roles, photographer and printmaker. As a printmaker, he strives for greater control when translating his vision to the page, and the new HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer delivers exactly that with its exhibition quality, consistency and performance.

The HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer provides the high-quality colour and black-and-white prints required by Watsons diverse portfolio, which ranges from celebrities and royalty to precious artefacts and personal travels. What is more, it affords Watson the control he needs to communicate his vision and continue his success as both an artist and a business owner.

One of the most important things to a photographer is the translation from the eye to the film, the film to the screen, and the screen to the paper, explains Watson. The translation the HP Designjet Z3200 achieves is amazing.

Watson demands perfection from his photo printers. Using the HP Designjet Z3200 expanded colour gamut, including the new HP 73 Chromatic Red ink, he achieves enhanced shades of red, green and blue. And, HP Quad-Black ink delivers outstanding, true neutral greys for breathtaking black-and-white prints.

You can translate work that you have done onto a piece of paper using the HP Designjet Z3200 and get this kind of depth, quality and vibrancy and it provides what a photographer wants more than anything else, consistency.

When printing a series of photos or limited editions, the HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer ensures Watson gets reliable, accurate colour time after time. From the captured image to the finished print, the HP Colour Centre makes profiling and calibration easy, using the embedded spectrophotometer with i1 colour technology.

With HP innovation as a backdrop, Watson can operate more efficiently, allowing him to focus on what matters most, his art. Watson has used HP Designjet Z-series printing technology for more than a year, and the Z3200 is the latest addition to his studio. So far, he has produced thousands of square feet of prints on his HP Designjet Z-series printers.

Watsons printing stays up and running thanks to proactive and preventive maintenance enabled by the HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printers ink and print head technology:

Optimized performance, maximized print head life and great ink efficiency result from proactive automatic servicing routines

Printing errors and media waste are virtually eliminated thanks to the Optical Drop Detector, which helps prevent clogged nozzles

And, with support for more than 50 types of HP large-format printing materials, he can easily switch between the media he uses most, including HP Super Heavyweight Plus Matte Paper and HP Matte Litho-realistic Paper. What is more, when using HP printing materials, the HP Vivera pigment inks offer long-lasting, water-resistant colour that resists fading for more than 200 years.

The art of printmaking

Somebody else printing your work does not make sense to me at all. You have to make it yourself, and the HP Designjet Z3200 is a remarkable piece of technology to do this.

The new HP Designjet Z3200 delivers what fine art photographers have always wanted, the ability to control their work from beginning to end. Now realizing their vision is easier than ever before.

New Canvas technical details from Design Supply for Canon iPF large format printers

Canvas is supplied in roll form and is available in widths of 17” 24” 36” 44” 54” & 60” rolls. The inkjet canvas is 100% cotton and identical to a traditional artist canvas used by creative artists. The iPF5000, W6400P, iPF6100, iPF8000 & iPF9000 with their archival Lucia pigmented inks will produce a print on these products with a life span in excess of 100+ years onto archival media (subject to display conditions).

Once the canvas has been printed, an extra finish can be applied in the form of a varnish. The varnish acts as a protective layer to the print, increases the archival life and gives a unique finish to the product. The varnish can be applied either by roller, sponge or brush. Each application will produce a different textured finish to the canvas. The roller produces a smooth natural finish allowing the texture of the canvas to show through, whilst the sponge will produce a rustic textured finish. The brush will create paint strokes, which mimic the artists original brush strokes.

Once you have completed the first two stages, you are now ready for stretching. By using the Dried Stretcher Bars, you will get a long lasting rigid product. Made of dried wood, the stretcher bars are less prone to natural expansion and contraction that can be sometimes found in other stretcher bars. The wedges supplied with the bars helps the stretching process, allowing you to get the last small percentage of stretch from the stretcher bars to create a rigid framed piece of artwork.

Large format paper and media for use on HP Designjets, Canon imagePROGRAF and other CAD and Graphic A1 AO printers

We strongly believe that the quality of the media and large format paper you feed into your printer is of paramount importance.

Design Supply Ltd now imports its paper from various sources throughout Europe such as Spain, France and Holland. Whilst our media is own branded the product we source is the same as you might buy from HP. HP manufacture machines not paper!

That means we can offer you some very competitive prices for large format paper to fit all the major large format CAD and graphic machines like the HP Designjet, Epson Stylus Pro and Canon ipf imagePROGRAF range.

We convert to all sizes including A1, AO and of course the entire roll sizes such as 914mm, 841mm and 610mm. We even do 594mm just for our own home UK market!

Only three or four companies make their own media. Most of the rest is repackaged by convertors. Some of the companies listed do not coat their own media either; they are retailers of media from a wide variety of standard sources.

Wide format printers require paper and comparable media with a special surface made to accept the ink.

Avoid cheap media. Don’t use regular paper; you normally need coated stock. The only printer that you can get Kraft paper or newsprint through is the HP 1050 and HP 1055 Designjet models. If you buy your paper directly from us, then you can avoid the loss of money involved in buying the wrong media from someone else (if you buy too cheap this is a sure way to end up paying more in the long run. Low cost paper for your wide format printer is not cost effective if you have to throw it away).

The media you use can actually influence the quality (or lack of quality) of your prints as much as the printer itself. You can take the same image and if you select the appropriate media you can win an award (and certainly win clients). But the same image on the wrong media will look embarrassing.

Be sure your media did not get damaged in shipment. If the ends got banged, this bump will disorient your print heads.

All the Design Supply large format papers carry our “no quibble money back guarantee.”

Canon iPF670/iPF770 Vs HP Designjet T520

The most popular and commonly purchased printers in the UK market are CAD A1 and A0 models with customers often looking at price as an overriding factor when making their decision. However, all large format printers are not created equal and customers often miss vital facts when choosing their new wide format printer.

When considering the differences between the HP T120/T520 and Canon iPF670/iPF770, there is one clear winner, but the list of advantages for the Canon models is extensive to say the least. For starters, the Canon ships with 540ml of ink in the box, Vs only 74ml on the HP model. That’s over 7 times as much, with a value of over £250 (at RRP) and is enough to produce hundreds and hundreds of CAD drawings!

Furthermore, the Canon iPF670 & iPF770 ink cartridges are over 23% cheaper per ml (at RRP) and combined with far lower running costs per print, the Canon is less than half the cost of the HP to produce an identical A1 or A0 Cad print.

Canon Pro Series Dual Roll Media Feeding – How does it work?

The new Canon PRO Series graphics range that has been taking the Wide Format Inkjet printing market by storm recently, is the ability to have two rolls of media simultaneously loaded into the machine, with the printer able to intelligently switch between the two completely automatically, giving you ultimate flexibility and potentially saving several hours every week that would normally be spent just changing rolls of paper the old fashioned way.

When paper is loaded onto the upper roll of the printer (roll 1) an internal sensor recognises its presence after only a few inches of paper have been fed into the machine and then automatically loads the paper, ready for printing. When specified or upgraded to the time-saving dual roll option, the lower roll (roll 2) paper sensor recognises that paper is being loaded and retracts the first roll to a hold position, ready to be re-loaded or switched at any time, making swapping paper simple and painless!
